October 1988 Centennial issue of National Geographic features a sculpture, referred to as “The Peopling of the Earth,” with the subtitle “Astonishing Ice Age discovery: Oldest realistic human portrait?”. VOL. 174, NO. 4. Good condition. Donated all my magazines except a handful. Thus is one that remains.
The sculpture is a 26,000-year-old head carved from mammoth ivory, found at Dolní Věstonice in the Czech Republic, and is considered one of the earliest realistic representations of a human face. The discovery is significant because it is associated with the oldest ceramic articles ever made and may represent a self-image, fertility charm, or a shamanic figure.
