This is a vintage ladies’ hand knit Cowichan sweater featuring a harlequin-like diamond pattern, based on a Mary Maxim pattern - number 175.
The sweater is made of wool in tones of navy blue, light blue and beige. The sweater does up with a metal zipper down the front and has a rounded collar, raglan sleeves and a small pocket at either bottom front side.
These types of sweaters are generically called Cowichans after a British Columbia native tribe called the Salish who live in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island on whose designs they are based. They are also referred to as curling sweaters in Canada.
🪡🧵This sweater's knit and color are in great condition but it does need some love. The zipper end has been replaced with some beads and is not original, there is a stain on the back of the arm and most noticeably there is a small hole on the front right side. It seems likely that someone wore a pin here and it pulled the thread.
100% wool
Hand knit
A pit-to-pit measurement of 21.5" indicates a bust size that would typically fit a womens medium size (size 8).
I had planned on keeping this gorgeous vintage piece, unfortunately it is slightly too small for me. Typically this type of sweater sells for close to $200. I have lowered the price here significantly because it is in need of repair.
