New vintage c. 1970s. Made in Canada. Rembrandt (Canadian company). Hallmark on spring ring: “STERLING”. Hallmark on other: “ECCO STER”.
Canadian silver jewellery History Research:
ECCO STER is the hallmark of “one of the oldest Canadian jewelry brands, ECCO, also known as The Electric Chain Company Ltd, [which] was active for four decades from 1915 to 1950”. Known for silver and gold hand craftsmanship. They may have been active in Ontario into the 1970s.
But “Rembrandt Jewelry Manufacturing Limited registered the similar jewelry trademark “Ecco” on September 1, 1969” in Ontario.
Conclusions! 😀:
1. Rembrandt found/bought and repackaged a lot of ECCO jewellery.
2. Rembrandt made their own line of chains using the ECCO hallmarks.
3. Rembrandt some worked with / or was thinking of taking over ECCO and that’s why they trademarked ECCO in 1969 and there are rumours of ECCO working into the 1970s. (Only they know what happened behind the scenes!)
