Mention of houseboats usually conjures up idyllic thoughts of lazy days spent floating along sunlit rivers and leisurely nights on moonlit bays. Hornyansky’s
"Houseboats on the Cabano", however, is considerably more realistic… There's work to be done even by those living in houseboats; and in his painting of this gypsy-like Hotilla moored on the Madawaska Kiver, the artist suggests that houseboat living can be something less than the stult dreams
Much of the appeal of the picture lies in the patchwork quality of its colouring and the artists eye for detail… The houseboats are real: the water gurgles and laps softly about them. Cabano, Quebec, Canada
The artist: Nicholas Hornyansky was born in Budapest in 1896. He studied etching and painting at an early age, and after studies in various European art centres, came to Canada and has since largely devoted his life to the Canadian scene Hornyansky's work achieved deserved international recognition in 1910 when, out of entries running into the thousands his prints were selected for hanging in the Library of Congress in Washington. The creator of Houseboats on the Cabano is the only Canadian artist to bo so honoured.
