This is a vintage commercial artistic label advertisement from the 1930s.
These labels were stuck to the ends of wooden crates filled with oranges, lemons, apples, other fruits and vegetables.
These colorful crates were shipped across the U.S.A. country via the rail system to be sold in local markets. Packagers and producers ordered labels from printing companies specializing in this work; these companies employed commercial artists in large numbers. Artists were not paid well and rarely received recognition for their creations. Most commercial uses of these labels ended during World War II due to rationing and shortages of basic goods. The cardboard box quickly became the new standard for shipping fruit, replacing the wooden crate so the labels that stuck to these crates, which had become obsolete, were practically all eradicated from the market in the 1950s.
