"A minor classic of reportage, *Oranges* was first conceived as a magazine article about oranges and orange juice, but John McPhee kept encountering so much irresistible information that he eventually found that he had in fact written a book. It is perhaps the last word on the subject (the first came in 500 B.C. and is attributed to Confucius): sketches of orange growers, discussions of the orange-juice industry, a history of oranges, botanical descriptions, and the like, are here combined in a lively, tart, and amusing style.
Roderick Cook, writing in *Harper's*, said: "This is a surprising book. You may come to the end of it and say to yourself, 'But I *can't* have read a whole book about oranges!' But the chances are you will have done so . . . It's a delicious book, in a word, and more absorbing than many a novel."
