Orthoceras fossil sculpture. An extinct "straight-shelled" cephalopod that lived around 370 million years ago during the Upper Devonian period. All questions are welcome. Great condition no chips or cracks. Thanks for visiting.
Ancient Cephalopod:
It is an ancestor of the modern-day squid and a relative of the chambered nautilus.
Appearance:
Characterized by a long, straight, conical shell, resembling a "straight horn". Shells could be smooth or ribbed.
Size:
They varied in size, ranging from a centimeter to over 14 feet long.
Habitat and Lifestyle:
They lived inside their shells, used tentacles to grab food, and moved using jet propulsion by squirting water.
Diet:
They were hunters, eating plankton and larger bottom-feeding animals like trilobites.
Geographic Location:
Commonly found in Morocco, Scandinavia, Sweden, and the Baltic states. The rock containing them is often polished for decorative purposes.
