This is "Pavilion of Women," by Nobel laureate, Pearl S. Buck. This Canadian edition was published by Longmans Green and Co. in 1946. It has cream cloth covered boards with black lettering and red graphics on the cover and spine. It also has elegant pictorial endpapers. The dust jacket is present and boldly colored in black and red.
It is the fictional story, set in 1930s China, of Madame Wu, a woman whose surprising decision to retire from married life at the age of 40 and select a concubine for her husband upsets her extended household. "A searching, adult study of women written with high seriousness and sympathy." - The New York Times Book Review
There is some smudging to the covers and lightly crushed spine ends. The corners are sharp, the inner pages unmarked though yellowed. The binding is tight and sound. The dustjacket has wear, yellowing, and is tattered around the edges. Please see all the photos.
