All About the Revered Equine Leather Shell cordovan is a dense, durable type of tanned equine leather made from the fibrous connective tissue found in the rump of a horse, not the outer skin. Florsheim Imperial discontinued their shell cordovan shoes in the 80s and were only made for a short period of history, they were only made in the "imperial quality" line that was only made in the U.S that featured florsheim's highest of quality. Making these shoes very rare to come across and the quality unbeatable. Please feel free to ask any questions!

coletsujita @kikik1 @kikik1 These are made from shell cordovan leather. Which is Essentially the rump of a horse between the skin and the muscle. It's a very durable and stylish type of leather thats quite expensive. These shoes don't state the leather likely because shell cordovan has a very distinctive look, shine, and feel to them.

coletsujita @kikik1 As far as where these were made it doesn't necessarily say on the shoe, However the "imperial quality" on the inside of the shoe at the heel, shows that these are from the imperial quality line. This line featured its highest quality. The codes and manufacturing further shows that this are definitely a U.S Vintage pair from the early 80s. very likely to be from Chicago Illinois.

coletsujita @kikik1 Yes you're correct. All genuine leather and many made in India especially as of recent. I'll do my best to answer your questions to the best of my ability. So in the 80s and specifically when florsheim just started, shell cordovan was very popular and florsheim commonly used it.

coletsujita @kikik1 It's easy to tell with this pair due to serveral reasons 1. The smooth, non grained surface 2. the unique wrinkles called "rolling" instead of creasing 3. the distinctive sturdy and durable feel 4. the shine on them is an easy way to spot shell cordovan 5. and lastly the colour is very distinctive especially with more vintage pieces. In the light its very red and without direct light its a deep red or brown colour.

coletsujita @kikik1 shell cordovan is not as popular and is not used much, Florsheim doesn't make shell cordovan leather shoes anymore. Shell Cordovan was only made with the 80s vintage made in U.S line. Which is probably why you've seen most of them on poshmark with different leather. These are very hard to come across these days.

kikik1 @coletsujita Some shoe makers always used Alden makes them , Prada makes them , Harry Rosen makes them in Italy lot of other shoe makers use them never heard of FLORSHEIM because making them is very expensive and these shoe were never sold more than 200 even back in the day . Anyways my question was is it written anywhere , i cannot figure out what leather shoe is made of looking at it if its lamb , genuine , , bonded , some cheap leather , Cordovan , crocodile unless written . Thanks agai

coletsujita @kikik1 Sorry i'll do my best to answer you, so you are just asking if its written any where? To answer that, no, it doesn't say exactly anywhere on the shoe that its shell cordovan leather. Again, by process of discovering its age and researching methods of identifying if its shell cordovan, I have found out that they are shell cordovan leather. Leather from a horses rump that is made from the fibrous connective tissue between the skin and muscle of that area.

coletsujita @kikik1 you may have never heard of Florsheim using it because the quality has went down since the 80s and the imperial quality line was discontinued shortly after it began. and yes Shell cordovan is still used today, by very high end brands making high end shoes.
Oct 12Reply
coletsujita
coletsujita @kikik1 Florsheim seemed to have move away from making higher end shoes and since then has made lower quality shoes which likely is causing confusion as you seem to know shell cordovan is expensive and hard to work with. and florsheim isn't necessarily considered a high quality or high end brand in todays age.
