This vintage English cup & saucer is from the ‘Rosalynde’ chintz pattern line from James Kent potteries. The ‘chintz’ patterns in chinaware were named for their resemblance to the cotton floral fabrics of the same name. Their popularity was part of the ‘cottage decorating’ trend that became a fashion item in the 1920’s and continued into the 1950’s. ‘Rosalynde’, which debuted in the 1930's, is a delectable mix of pink and yellow roses and blue forget-me-nots on a white ground, and the cup sports a rosebud at the top corner of the handle.
The cup of the set is 3 ¼ inches wide at the mouth and 3 inches tall. The saucer is 5 ½ inches across. Both pieces are in excellent condition, without cracks, chips, scratches, stains, or any other damage, but there is one small manufacturing defect visible on the back of the saucer. It appears that one of the stilts (the small nailed stands used to separate items in the kiln) slipped during the firing process and left a small damage in the glaze. This is not visible from the front, and should not affect either the use of the piece or its collectability.
And the set is definitely bargain priced!
