ROYALTY CHINTZ CHEESE / BUTTER

This is a vintage English cheese or butter dish in the ‘Royalty’ chintz pattern from Royal Winton potteries. Royalty’s design is a vibrant mix of red field poppies, blue cornflowers, and orange foliage on a rich yellow ground. The ‘chintz’ patterns in chinaware were named for their resemblance to the printed cotton floral fabrics of the same name. Their popularity was part of the ‘cottage decorating’ trend that became a fashion item in the 1920’s and continued into the 1950’s. The bottom of the dish is a little over 6 inches long and 4 ½ inches wide; the top is an inch smaller in both dimensions so that it leaves an inch wide lip on the bottom plate. Both pieces are in excellent condition, without cracks, chips, scratches, stains, or any other damage or defect. Lovely set – at a bargain price!
