Wonderful, unique hand-carved wood and hand painted polychrome pair of figurines traditionally from Java representing an older man and woman. Their posture is quite fluid as they are sitting on their heels, each with a hunch to their backs. Each figure is hand carved from wood, and then covered in a white paste to later to paint the patterns to the clothing, hair, headdress and face. They look just like an archetypical representation of a couple that has been married for absolutely ever.
I approached several specialists and museums about these pieces and unfortunately they did not instantly recognise them. One suggestion was they may represent servants or an older married couple - but what the figurines would be intended for (simply home decor / for a ritual / altar decor) was unclear. I can make no guarantees that this pair is or is not haunted - but I would speak to them kindly just *in case*
Condition: Both figures with cracks to the painted surface and some losses to the nose and chin. The female with loss to the top knot of hair, on the side of the arms (both sides), nails and on the skirt base. The male with damage to nearly every edge on the headdress, nose, chin, right shoulder, left arm (sleeve), his nails, a crack running on his back (towards the left side) and a few losses and scratches on the skirt area. There are small details painted in gold (all edges to the tops), which have dulled nicely with age.
They date ca 1980-early 2000s
They are 10 inches tall
