Richard Ferris, Orchard Pottery, Castleconnell, Ireland Vase

October 7, 2024 About 6 1/2 inches tall and 4 1/2 inches in diameter Hand thrown pottery vase from the Orchard Pottery in Castleton, Ireland. Richard Ferris, the potter, works alone to produce an ever changing variety of ideas, shapes and patterns that could only be Irish. Each piece is made completely by hand. Mostly wheel thrown but with some hand building and modelling techniques also in use. One of a kind items predominate with just a few semi standard items. All the decoration is individually designed and carried through completely by hand. No transfers or stencils are used. A pencil sketch on the unfired glaze captures the shape of each pot. Colours, line drawing and detail are added to slowly build into vibrant Celtic patterns owing not a little to the Book of Kells.
