Vintage 1935 Royal Crown Derby Mikado blue and gold oval plate.
Probably an under plate for a vintage gravy boat. I got it (mismatched) with a larger modern gravy boat (pictured) but the boat is slightly chipped so I am not listing it (if interested please message me).
It measures 7 1/8 inch long 5 3/8 inch wide and is backstamped in blue with a 1935 mark.
The delicate white fine bone china is decorated in classical chinoiserie blue and has 22kt gold painted trim.
“The Mikado pattern was designed in 1894 by Royal Crown Derby’s art director, Thomas Amos Reed. It was inspired by rice paper drawings that he had obtained in the Far East.
Variations of the legend associated with the pattern are many. Indeed, little imagination is needed to weave a tale with such romantic subjects as ‘Wandering Sad-Eyed Lover’, ‘The Tall Standing Pagodas of the Orient’, ‘The Flight of Cranes’, all set against a backdrop or rivers, mountains and delicate leaf tracery.“
