Originating in the Satsuma province of Japan during the seventeenth century, Satsuma ware is a type of earthenware pottery known for its elaborate, distinctive designs done in multicolored enamel glazes on a crackled background. This beautiful collectible plate circa 1970s is painted in the Satsuma technique with hundreds of tiny raised dots in Moriage-style relief and gold gilt trim and embellishments. A floral pattern frames the hand-painted centre motif which depicts a Geisha performing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Measures 12” wide x 1.75” high and weighs a substantial 3 lbs. Stamped SATSUMA on base. VERY GOOD vintage condition. No cracks or repairs; moderate wear consistent with age (the fine crazing is intentional on Satsuma ware).
