The handsome iridescent glass that we now call 'carnival glass' was developed in the early 1900's as an inexpensive substitute for elegant (and costly) hand-made favrile glass. The manufacturing process for mass producing iridescent glass involved spraying various metal salts on machine-molded glass and then firing it to produce the finish. The term 'carnival glass' was coined later during the depression of the 1930's, when many glass manufacturers liquidated their inventory by selling it at cut-rate prices to the travelling carnivals and circuses for use as prizes.
This vintage carnival glass bowl from Imperial Glass is decorated on its interior surface with the ' Scrolls' pattern, and on the outside with the 'Files' pattern. The outside pattern enhances the wavy outer edges of the bowl, giving them the appearance of a ruffled frill, especially since the marigold lustre varies in density from very full to almost negligible.
The bowl is approximately 9 inches in diameter and three inches deep, and is in excellent condition, without cracks, chips, wear, stains, or other damage or defect.
Very nice!
