Description
The history of the American West has often been portrayed as an uninterrupted series of triumphs, a ruthlessly inspiring story in which greed and cruelty were presented as business acumen and courage. Later, this story was turned upside down and conveyed into an equally misleading narrative with a moral message in which conquest and dispossession overshadow everything that ever happened beyond the Mississippi. But the truth about the West is much more complicated and far more exciting.
This excellent series illuminates the lives of various characters - from explorers, soldiers and Native American warriors to settlers, railway builders and shrill showmen - who tell their story through diaries, letters, and autobiographies. Some of the central characters of the film are well-known personalities, while others are unknown to most watching. But none of these characters fit any of the stereotypes presented in the one-sided myths about the West. Instead, they give an impression of the time they lived in, and furthermore provide a truthful insight into the lives of the Wild West.
