Kokeshi dolls originated in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868 CE). Artisans (known as kijishi) who made wooden bowls and trays began crafting these dolls to sell as children's toys and souvenirs to visitors of local hot springs (onsens). Kokeshi dolls are believed to be symbols of good luck, protection against evil spirits, and wishes for a healthy child. They are also exchanged as tokens of friendship.
These particular ones were being made after World War II and allowed for greater artistic freedom in shape, design, and color, often reflecting modern or personal themes. Often sold to soldiers in Occupied Japan.
This entire set features 3 large 8-inch tall dolls. The remaining 6 are smaller in size. Their heads bobble, and they can come off. I have also included 2 wine cork toppers.
This set has been well taken care of, and they are in near perfect condition. They have been carefully wrapped in storage for the past decade and were carefully displayed beforehand.
