Set of 4 Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Cast Iron and Brass Candleholders A set of 4 cast iron candleholders, marked “J. H. Q. Denmark”. Each is cast in two parts, having a slender candle cup, threaded onto a bowl form base with a brass ring. The series is called “Taarn” which is Danish for “half-shell”. There were 3 original cast iron designs by Quistgaard in 1962. Taarn is one of them. Since they are stamped “Denmark” to the brass centre top, they date to 1962-1964. Dansk switched candle holder manufacturing from Denmark in 1965. The postwar-era work of Danish sculptor and designer Jens Harald Quistgaard is still exceedingly popular in living rooms, dining rooms and kitchens in the United States, Europe and Japan, particularly in the homes of mid-century design enthusiasts. Having created serving pieces and barware for Dansk Designs for 30 years, Quistgaard produced striking Scandinavian modernist designs that married function with sophisticated form.
