Here is a large 5” pendant made from a capiz shell, also known as the windowpane oyster. Capiz shells are valued for their translucent, pearlescent appearance and have been used in Filipino craftsmanship for centuries.
The pendant's design incorporates several elements:
A large, irregularly shaped piece of capiz shell forms the base. It’s on a leather cord with lobster clasp
Two smaller, round or teardrop-shaped pieces of capiz shell are set within decorative metal frames and attached to the larger shell.
A metal "hashtag" or grid-like design is affixed to the lower left side of the shell.
The pendant hangs from a black cord.
Capiz shells come from a mollusk called Placuna placenta and are found in the Philippines. They are named after the province of Capiz, where they are abundant.
