It’s a truly beautiful iridescent vintage Taxco inlaid abalone 925 sterling silver link necklace by Mexican silversmith and Modernist designer Rubi Ramirez. A high quality piece of wearable art was executed circa the 1930s or 1940s, with the latest date being 1948 when the Mexican eagle assay was introduced. Have seen her work described as Art Deco and Midcentury Modern, but either way the consensus is that her work is spectacularly beautiful. Ramirez worked for William Spratling, the pioneer designer and master craftsman silversmith who had a foundational influence on the development of the ever-collectible Taxco style of silver jewelry, and also worked with and/or for two of Spratling’s protégés, Hector Aguilar and Pedro Castillo.
