"Speech Training is now one of the most important subjects of the school curriculum, but the attempt to remedy defects in children's speech is unavailing until the children's whole-hearted co-operation is gained. Very little progress is made by repeated instructions to Tommy to say 'how', not 'ow'. This kind of correction soon becomes irritating and boring to all concerned.
The best way of training young children's speech is to teach rhymes and jingles, each deling with one special sound or common fault, and it is vital that these should interest and amuse the children. If the rhymes are short and appeal to the children they will be learned eagerly and in great number, and will be often repeated without any pressure from the teacher..."
