Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is an animated Western epic set in the late 19th century American frontier, told primarily from the perspective of a wild Kiger mustang named Spirit (narrated by Matt Damon).
The Wild Life: Spirit is the brave and fiercely independent leader of his herd in the unspoiled Cimarron territory.
Capture and Defiance: Out of curiosity, Spirit is captured by the U.S. Cavalry and taken to a military fort. There, a stern and determined officer known as The Colonel attempts to "break" Spirit's wild spirit. The proud mustang relentlessly resists all attempts to be tamed, enduring days without food or water.
A Bond with Little Creek: While in captivity, Spirit meets a captive Lakota man named Little Creek. Recognizing a kindred spirit, Little Creek helps Spirit escape, freeing many of the cavalry's horses in the process.
The Struggle for Freedom: Spirit is taken back to the Lakota village, where Little Creek attempts to tame him with kindness, but Spirit remains defiant, though he does fall for a gentle painted mare named Rain. Spirit and Little Creek gradually develop mutual respect.
The Railroad Threat: After another dramatic turn of events involving a cavalry attack and an injury to Rain, Spirit is recaptured and forced into hard labor building the transcontinental railroad—a line set to destroy his homeland.
