This is a numbered print by my Mother's Mentor and Teacher, Marta Brestovansky. Marta was born in 1937 in what was then Czechoslovakia (today called the Czech Republic). Her first experience with art was as a child when she helped her grandmother paint signs of peace on the coffins of unknown soldiers during World War II. At 14, Marta was given special permission to attend the College of Fine Arts in Bratislava due to the excellence of her portfolio.
In 1968, Moscow sent troops into Czechoslovakia, which was then a satellite state of the Soviet Union, to crush the reforms of the Prague Spring. This prompted Marta and her husband to flee to Canada as political refugees. Upon arrival, the couple chose to settle in Orillia, as their only knowledge of Canada had come from her readings of translations of humourist Stephen Leacock.
Once settled, Marta continued her work as an artist, but also took up teaching art at Georgian College and Sir Sandford Fleming College. Marta’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Canada, as well as Europe. Marta died in 1999. (taken from the Orillia Museum of Art and History)
