The film is a swashbuckling adventure based on the classic novel by Alexandre Dumas, focusing on themes of betrayal, imprisonment, and revenge.
The story begins in 1815 with Edmond Dantès (Jim Caviezel), a young, kind-hearted sailor who is about to be promoted to captain and marry his beloved Mercédès (Dagmara Domińczyk). However, his best friend, the jealous Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce), conspires with a jealous colleague and a corrupt magistrate to frame Edmond for treason. Edmond is wrongfully imprisoned without trial for 13 years in the infamous island fortress, the Château d'If.
