The story centers on Terry Wolfmeyer (Joan Allen), a sharp-witted suburban wife and mother of four daughters. Her life is thrown into chaos when her husband mysteriously disappears, which she assumes is because he ran off to Sweden with his secretary.
Consumed by anger and despair, Terry becomes an increasingly heavy drinker, pushing away her daughters (played by Alicia Witt, Erika Christensen, Keri Russell, and Evan Rachel Wood), who are each dealing with their own struggles.
She forms an unexpected, often tumultuous, relationship with her neighbor, Denny Davies (Kevin Costner), a retired baseball star turned radio talk show host who is also a fellow heavy drinker. Denny slowly becomes a source of stability, and eventually a lover and a sort of father figure to her daughters.
The film follows the family over the course of three years as Terry and her daughters navigate their complicated lives, relationships, and Terry's volatile emotions. The movie culminates in a shocking discovery that re-contextualizes the family's entire experience and allows Terry to finally begin to heal.
