‘The World Atlas of Archeology’ coffee table book

Large vintage 1985 hardcover coffee table book. Comes with original box. Like new condition. First published in France, this work is global in scope, including archaeology in lesser studied areas such as Vietnam, Korea, and Japan, as well as well-documented ancient cultures. In a geological and chronological arrangement, each section is introduced by a history of the archaeology of the region, followed by topical articles on a wide range of subjects, from art, trade, and agriculture to such sharply focused subjects as ``Archaeology and Apartheid.'' This atlas aims at presenting material from the perspective of ``new archaeology,'' reconstructing diverse peoples' lives based on their material culture. The articles, written largely by French contributors are, unfortunately, unsigned, and subject access is through a glossary only. Lavishly illustrated, the atlas draws attention both to recent archaeological techniques and to international concern for preserving the past, while encompassing a rich diversity of source material. It will be of interest to both laypersons and scholars.
