The year is 1828. Niall, the narrator of the chronicle, is a fictitious character who, with his pregnant sister Jennie leaves Ireland and sails for New York. While on board ship, they are befriended by John Neilson, co-owner and former editor of the Quebec Gazette. Jennie dies in childbirth and Mr. Neilson offers Niall an apprenticeship. Niall lives with the Paradis family in order to learn French. He eventually becomes a reporter in the Legislative Assembly and observes the Parliamentary sessions, most notably of 1831, the Fabriques Dispute, the Tracy-Duvernay affair, and the riotous Montreal election of 1832, closely followed by the disastrous cholera epidemic of that summer.
The whole thing is a delightful invention of Jan Henry Morgan. After years of painstaking research - and, it must be said, remarkably effective research - Mrs. Morgan has put together a blend of history and fiction that is more accurate than most history and more entertaining than most fiction.
