Unique Antique / Vintage Sugar Bowl with Lid, Made in Japan
Hand painted floral design with gold accents.
"Nippon" refers to a period of Japanese porcelain production, specifically items made for export to the United States between 1891 and 1921. During this time, the U.S. Customs Service required imported goods to be marked with their country of origin, and "Nippon" (the Japanese word for Japan) was used for this purpose.
The sugar bowl with a lid in the image is an example of "Nippon ware," characterized by its hand-painted decorations, often featuring floral motifs like the roses seen on this piece, as well as intricate gold details and moriage (raised enamel work). After 1921, the U.S. Customs Service ruled that the English name "Japan" must be used, leading to the decline of the "Nippon" mark on exported goods.
