Philip Roth was critically praised for his entire career. He was also prolific, with dozens of novels published. While American Pastoral, Portnoy’s Complaint, and The Human Stain are usually cited as his best works, this volume–Zuckerman Unbound–easily stands among them. It is the second novel in the Zuckerman Trilogy. A pseudo-autobiographical work, the trilogy describes the life and literary career of Nathan Zuckerman whose experiences are uncannily similar to Roth’s. According to Harold Bloom, the Zuckerman novels are some of the finest examples of American tragicomedy. The character also remained one of Roth’s greatest influences, appearing regularly in many of his other works. No Roth collection would therefore be complete without Zuckerman Unbound.
