Vegetable Ivory Hand Carved Tagua Nut Beaded Necklace

This 39 cm long necklace has graduated beads the color of a very creamy coffee latte. The biggest bead is 1 cm across. This fascinating necklace is made from hand carved beads created from the Tagua or Ivory nut, which is a seed from certain palm trees. The seeds or nuts have been used to make jewelry and buttons in the 1800's and probably earlier. The wood is very hard, the workability and fine grain texture is very similar to true ivory. Some buttons are still made from it. This necklace will not only garner compliments, but carries with it a fascinating explanation. In good condition, with some wear.
