The book is an overview of the art movement known as Cloisonism and its connection to Van Gogh's work.
The featured painting, Irises, was created by Van Gogh in May 1889 while he was at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France.
The book was published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Ontario (Musée des beaux-arts de l'Ontario).
The painting itself is a still life that was intended as a color study, noted for its vibrant use of color and thick application of paint (impasto).
