Vintage 1930’s Horace Welch design Floating Australian Opal 14k Gold Necklace 18” 14k yellow gold natural Australian "floating opal" pendant. This  well-crafted pendant is extra colorful!   Being made with 14 k gold is not common with these vintage pieces, making this piece a rarity. The pendant features a large oval glass globe that is filled with clear liquid (glycerine) and small pieces of natural opal. The pieces of opal float freely in the liquid, creating a wonderful kaleidoscope display of colors and fire. These opals flash with lots of neon tangerine and lime fire, as well as red, blue and purple.  The opal globe is topped with thick yellow 14k gold cap that has a beautiful raised etched leaf design.  The pendant is suspended from simple 14k gold chain.  This pendant is extra colorful, full of exuberant, ever-changing fire. Chain Stamped 14k. Pendant ring stamped 14k There are no patents or other identifiable marks. Approximate measurements: Necklace length: 7.5” (15” total single length) Pendant Width: 3/8” Pendant length: 6/8” “The floating opal was invented by Horace H. Welch and first patented in 1922 through to 1932. Floating opal jewelry continued to be made through the 20th century ”
