Banko ware is a type of Japanese pottery that originated in the mid-18th century. It was created by a wealthy merchant named Nunami Rouzan, who hoped his pieces would last for generations, hence the name "Banko" meaning "eternity". The tradition, also known as Yokkaichi Banko, continues to this day, with a focus on heat-resistant teaware and decorative items.
While the tradition continues, the number of recognized Banko master craftsmen has dwindled to 22, according to one source.
Today:
Banko ware is still produced and appreciated for its unique heat-resistant properties and artistic designs.
