The lamp was most likely used at someone's home, providing light by burning vegetable or whale oil. It was mostly popular in the Netherlands, England and other countries across Europe. These lamps originated in Holland and were called Snotneus due to its design and function. They were quite messy to operate as excess oil would often drip into the reservoir beneath the container resembling a leaky nose for which it was named.
Possibly from the turn of the century but could have been made up to the 1950s as a decorative piece.
Now many people use them as a decorative piece or as a watering can for smaller plants.
