Eleanor Ellis was a Toronto dressmaker in the 1950’s and 60’s and saw the need for couture wear that might be more “affordable”, taking her cue from Jeanne Lanvin and Coco Chanel she began to recreate their designer wear in a more affordable way, thus creating a Canadian designer brand unto herself. She displayed some of her creations at Expo ‘67 and won the critics choice award for best cocktail dress.
