Fede rings are an ancient sentimental design consisting of two clasped hands. The design in Roman times was called dextrarum iunctio, from the Latin meaning joined right hands. During the Middle Ages, these rings were called fede rings from the Italian for trust and fidelity.
Roman in origin, the term “fede” is Italian for faith, fidelity, and trust. This symbolism is apparent in the phrase “mani in fede,” which means hands clasped in faith. The fede design depicts two hands clasping together in love/agreement or appearing to shake hands.
