Evoke 18th-century French romance with this charming vintage decorative plate. This piece features a beautifully embossed pewter frame with a detailed Rococo-style scroll and foliate design along its scalloped edge.
The centerpiece is a lovely porcelain cabochon. It showcases a classic "fête galante" or courting scene, a motif made famous by the French Rococo painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). The "Fragonard" signature on the image indicates it is in the artist's iconic style, depicting a romantic couple in pastoral 18th-century attire. This specific "Love Story" theme became immensely popular and was widely used by fine porcelain makers.
While the porcelain itself is unmarked, this romantic style is heavily associated with producers from the renowned Limoges region of France, known for its high-quality porcelain. This piece is a wonderful example of that celebrated aesthetic.
Measuring approximately 5.75 inches in diameter, it's perfect for a gallery wall, curio cabinet, or bookshelf. The back has an integrated loop for easy hanging.
Believed to be a mid-20th-century French creation, it is in excellent vintage condition with a lovely aged patina. A wonderful find for collectors of vintage pewter, romantic decor, or Limoges-style porcelain.
