This is a vintage French Canadian folk art wooden carving of a bearded gentleman wearing a touque (a warm knitted cap) with a basket on one wrist by Treffle Picard. The detail on the man's face is very expressive and his posture is quite realistic. The artist carved "T. Picard" on the back of the base so the work is "signed by the artist".
It is about 13 inches tall, 3 3/4 inch wide and 2 5/8 inches deep. It is in very good condition. There is no damage. Please see all the photos.
"Treffle Picard. Sculptor. Woodcarver. Saint-Roch-des-Aulnaies, Quebec. Active 1940 – 1980’s.
Treffle Picard started wood carving at L’ecole-de-Sculpture under Andre and J.J. Bourgault in 1940 when they opened their school in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec. He maintained a studio in Saint-Stanislas, Quebec for many years. His early work was traditional painted carvings of Quebec people. In the later 1950’s his work was unpainted and he also made carvings of animals as well as larger studio works of people."
