Robert Service was a Scottish-Canadian poet and writer who was born on January 16, 1874, in Preston, Lancashire, England. He is best known for his poems about the Yukon and the Klondike Gold Rush, which he experienced firsthand while working as a bank clerk and a cowboy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Service's most famous works include "The Shooting of Dan McGrew," "The Cremation of Sam McGee," and "The Spell of the Yukon," all of which capture the rugged, adventurous spirit of the Canadian wilderness. His poetry is known for its simple, straightforward language and its ability to evoke a sense of place and time. Service moved to Canada in 1894 and worked in various jobs before becoming a writer. He published his first book of poetry, "Songs of a Sourdough," in 1907, which was a huge success and made him a household name. Service died on September 11, 1958. He is remembered as one of Canada's most beloved poets, and his work continues to inspire readers around the world.
