In October, 1912, "Poetry", a magazine scarcely larger than a man's hand, began appearing in Chicago. The editor was Harriet Monroe. She was handed a little batch of handwritten sheets of poetry. A man named Carl Sandburg had written them. A great conviction of "beauty and power" swept over here and in the March, 1914 number they appeared, starting with "Chicago". He went on to attain great prominence and power with his strong heart and sympathetic verse. Carl Sandburg lived from 1878 to 1967.
