Howard Pierce is an American artist best known for his bird, marine, human, and wildlife figures, such as this "Quail Pair in Tree". In 1945 he began to produce ceramics using Florida China clay, Kentucky/Tennessee ball clay, feldspar, and potash. He also used nepheline syenite, a porcelain medium. He individually made all his pottery and figures by hand, beginning with design, followed by mold making, selecting clay and glazes, and finishing with firing. His simple and minimalist designs are considered part of the Mid-Century Modern (MCM) design style.
