Authentic Indigenous hand-carved wall art by Jason Baker, dated 1995. This vertical totem carving represents a symbolic pairing of the Wild Man and Owl—spiritual figures referenced in the handwritten inscription on the reverse.
The inscription reads (corrected for clarity):
"Legend, the Wild Man and Owl is two of their powers that meet and burnt their faces off."
It is signed: “Squamish Kwakiutl '95.”
While the grammar and spelling reflect a casual or regional hand, the piece itself draws from the rich traditions of the Squamish Nation (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and the Kwakwaka’wakw (also known as Kwakiutl). These are two distinct but geographically connected Indigenous groups from the Pacific Northwest Coast of British Columbia.
The carving is likely made of cedar, a lightweight and culturally significant wood often used in Northwest Coast Indigenous art. It retains its original red suede or leather hanging loop, stitched in white thread.
