This is a wonderful piece of Canadian furniture history: a highly collectible vintage miniature cedar chest from the famous Lane Cedar Chests company. These small boxes were traditionally given out as a promotional item under the "Girl Graduate Plan" to encourage the purchase of a full-sized hope chest.
Maker: Lane Cedar Chests. The chests for the Canadian market were often produced by Knechtel Furniture Limited of Hanover, Ontario.
Retailer: The interior lid features a clear stamp: "Presented by Marshall's Furniture Store, Oakville, Ontario."
Local Significance (Chatham, ON): This style of miniature chest may have been made or distributed through a connection to the Chatham area, making it an excellent find for collectors of Chatham-Kent memorabilia or local Ontario furniture history.
Material: Constructed from aromatic Cedar wood with a light stain/finish. The cedar interior helps naturally repel moths and other insects, making it perfect for storing linens or wool.
Features:
Hinged lid with two small metal clasps (hinges).
Front features a circular escutcheon (keyhole). The original key is almost always lost but can sometimes be sourced separately.
The underside may have a partial label from the Canadian manufacturer, Knechtel Furniture, though the bottom felt is worn.
