These carvings are naturally rustic. the slight chipping of paint on the corners, chipping of wood on edges, are a part of the appeal. I do not know the year these were made, but they do appear to be early to mid century.
BIT OF HISTORY
Dogs of Foo are guardian animals that originated in China and can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-211 CE). These lion-like creatures were often placed at the entrances of palaces, temples, and homes to guard and protect.
Fu dogs are typically placed on each side of a doorway, on the exterior and facing out away from the interior of the home. It's best to place them in pairs and not on the floor. You often see them on platforms, raised above the ground at waist height.
