This Vintage Folk Art piece was hand carved in Quebec Canada by Renowned Artist Caron was a part of my in-laws collection. Made in the 60’s ? Wood carving is one of the many traditional arts in Québécois culture. Sculptures are mostly made of basswood, butternut, white pine, white oak, poplar or sumac.
It is one piece of wood by hand requiring many hours of work. Incredible amount of detail. This size is RARE
His face is so expressive, the way he’s looking off and pondering something. Hands in pockets, longer overcoat.
He is has a carved hole where there used to be a cane. It’s not obvious if you didn’t know. The Cane was lost moving my in-laws. There is also 2 dark marks at the artist carved signature as pictured.
You will see many wood carved folk art pieces from Quebec but I have not found any with this level of detail. It is a unique piece of collection and a must have if you have interest in folk art!
Approx measurements
Height 18”
Width 5.5” at man’s widest part (elbows) and 6” base
Depth 4.5” at belly and base 5.5”
Circumference at belly is 15”
Once again this is from a family home that treasured him. I know he was expensive back in the day.
Considering the missing cane and the marks, priced accordingly. This is a pre owned item, classic Quebec Folk piece. Pictures from all angles with all flaws visible. He is in EUC despite the specific things I have called out.
