This is a relief molded ceramic pitcher jug that measures 7" tall x 6 1/2" diameter at widest x 6 1/2" across at handle to spout, with base diameter 3 3/4". The item is not marked by a maker. The colour is a warm golden brown. The pitcher is decorated all around with a scene originally produced by potter, William Ridgeway (1800-1849 England). The scene that decorates his pitcher was called, "Tam O' Shanter". Tam O' Shanter is a wonderful epic poem in which Scottish poet Robert Burns paints a vivid picture of the drinking classes in the old Scotch town of Ayr in late 19th Century. Look closely at the scene as you turn the pitcher around and you will see the Tam O' Shanter character in a tavern drinking with his good friends. The clock on the wall shows the late hour. Later Tam is riding his mare Meg into the night to get home. He must pass a ghostly church with spirits.....look, one spirit in the form of a lady, has a hold of the horse's tail! Tam is heading for the bridge fast, because as you know, the spirits will not cross the water. This charming pitcher is probably a replica of the Ridgeway as it is not signed. Numbered on bottom mold #223 Etched 217 It is in good condition.
