Step back in time with this charming vintage ceramic beer stein, a wonderful piece of German craftsmanship. Made in West Germany by the renowned Wick-Werke manufactory, this stein is a perfect example of mid-century German folk art.
The body of the stein features a classic cream-colored salt glaze, beautifully contrasted with deep cobalt blue details. The central motif depicts a romantic scene of a hunter with his rifle and loyal dog courting a maiden in a pastoral setting.
Flanking the scene are traditional German proverbs: "Halt Maß und Ziel" (which translates to "Keep measure and aim" or "Maintain moderation and purpose") and "Trink nie zuviel" ("Never drink too much"). These timeless adages add a touch of authentic character and wisdom.
The stein is topped with an ornate, securely attached pewter lid that shows a lovely aged patina. The handle features intricate blue scrollwork, completing the classic design.
Markings & History:
The base is clearly stamped with the Wick-Werke maker's mark (a stylized 'W' over a castle gate), "MADE IN WEST GERMANY," and the mold number 1906. The "West Germany" mark dates this piece to the period between 1949 and 1990. Wick-Werke was a notable producer of high-quality stoneware in Grenzhausen, Germany, and this piece is a testament to their legacy. Please note, 1906 is the model number, not the year of production.
This piece is in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips, cracks, or crazing.
