A WWI picture of a Canadian sergeant taken in Paris on November 11, 1917 soon after the battle of Passchendaele (3rd Ypres). The soldier is posing in front of a forest backdrop while half sitting with his cap on a small table (I tried identifying the cap badge but was unsuccessful) in a Paris photo studio. The back is marked "Paris 11/11/1917" which is exactly 1 year to the day before the war ended. Likely the soldier is on leave; Canadian troops were involved in the battle of Passchendaele which started in July of that year and only ended 5 days before this picture was taken. Since a WWI battlefield was nowhere to keep a good sized photo he probably sent it home to reassure his parents or wife. Sadly his family kept this picture for 107 years afterwards but the current heirs could not be bothered and left it in a box of mixed goods at an auction. The frame, of a much later date, is 10 1/2" tall by 8 1/2" in width and the picture is 9 1/2" by 7 1/8".
