...visor pin, Vintage religious good luck charm
An old original WWII era `St. Christopher Be my Guide' Cap Badge, made in Italy from a stamped white metal with turquoise coloured enamel accents. These were produced in the 1930s and 1940s as a good luck charm representing St. Christopher, the patron saint of travellers. These were not only fixed to automobile sun visors (hence the two pins), but worn on USAAF caps as well.
The legend is that St. Christopher carried a child, who was unknown to him, across a river before the child revealed himself as Christ.
Condition: age-worn die-stamped metal with light blue enamel paint to the sky sections. Most of the enamel has worn off as the colour would´ve cover the entire sky area. It is lovely that the sky is a soft gold tone against the silvery white metal and a choice could be made to carefully remove the rest of the enamel. Marked to the front "Italy" just above the hood of the car, on the rounded edge of the sky. The two pins at the back are quite sharp and quite bent. They turn quite easily in the metal housing.
I´ve left this item in completely original untouched condition.
Size: 2 inches wide x 1-1/4 inches high (5.2 cm wide x 5.8 cm high)
